Martha Sielman - Art Quilts

About - Resumé

Martha SielmanI am a quilt artist working with cotton and silk fabrics. I have always loved working with fabric. My mother taught me to sew doll's clothes when I was five. A self-taught fabric artist, I have been designing fabric wall-hangings since I was a teenager.

I made my first quilt in 1988, when my eldest child was born. I now have a business making art quilts on commission for private and business clients. My current quilts constantly explore new ideas and techniques. Each of my quilts tells a story. The story, whether of the sea, daydreams, or jazz drumming, is personal to each quilt's owner.

I use my own hand-dyed and hand-painted fabrics as my palette. Free machine quilting and embellishments are used as finishing choices. My quilts are pieced, appliquéd and quilted on the sewing machine, with some details added by hand. Many of my quilts also include glass beads, button, lace and found objects.
